Tetramer Participates in Annual Outreach Event

As part of the company’s outreach program, Tetramer has participated in the Anderson-Oconee-Pickens Business & Industry Showcase every year since 2013. The Showcase is an annual event, bringing together local 8th graders and a select group of high school seniors to learn about the types of jobs and careers at a variety of businesses from the surrounding area. The “Top 150” high school seniors also get to practice job hunting skills, including resume preparation, interviewing, and networking. Tetramer’s booth at the Showcase is always a popular one, featuring fun and educational science demonstrations to draw the students in and spark discussions about material science, chemistry, and engineering. In addition to explaining the science demonstrations, business representatives answer the students’ career related questions, such as what a typical day is like, what high school classes are good preparation for their job, what skills are helpful for success, and what the representatives like best about their job.

Beginning in 2013, Margaret Shaughnessy, Andrew Schmidt, Debra Tindall, Quynh-Ho Taylor, Nina Breakiron, Joseph Murray, Michael Schreuder, Kyle Berger, and Ben Bergmann have been involved in the showcase. Scientific principles that have been demonstrated include the phases of matter, chromatography, fluid dynamics, sound waves, fluorescence, refractive index, acid-base chemistry, static electricity, and electrical circuits. Additional outreach demonstrations and classroom lessons have developed through connections made with teachers and school administrators at the Showcase.
